Dr. Paul Skellenger received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1985. At that time, he joined the staff at Research Pet and Bird Hospital in Austin, Texas. Research Pet and Bird Hospital is a well equipped small animal, birds, and exotics practice with an outstanding reputation and has maintained its standing as one of the best practices in Austin. The hospital provides progressive, up to date veterinary care and a quality of service that is extraordinary. Dr. Skellenger is well known in the Austin area for his skills involving the care of birds, small mammals, and reptiles and for his unselfish dedication to his patients. It is remarkable that generations of pets and their owners have come through the doors of Research Pet and Bird Hospital and Dr. Skellenger has been instrumental in keeping up the standard of care so this will continue for generations to come. For more than twenty years, Dr. Skellenger has vigorously pursued the acquisition of new skills and knowledge to provide real healthcare for birds, small mammals, and reptiles. His love of these species has grown and he is just as happy working on a parrot or lizard as he is a dog or cat. Make no mistake, his ability to diagnose and treat ailments in dogs and cats is exceptional and is still a large part of his day. There are days; however, that the birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, turtles, and snakes outnumber the dogs and cats. Dr. Skellenger would say that his most important job is making sure clients really understand what the issues are with their pet and what needs to be done. For him, the key is understanding.
Dr. Skellenger has been overheard to say that retirement is over rated. He has made the decision to continue to practice as a veterinarian with a dedication to excellence. Serving his clients with his experienced background, he looks to new areas where patient care and client understanding can be improved. His newest interests are endoscopy, laparoscopy, and oncology. He feels an obligation to his clients to provide the best veterinary medicine has to offer, a level of commitment that is pervasive in all aspects of the practice. It is what he expects, and it is what his clients expect.
Avian and non domestic species including small mammals and reptiles now make up approximately 35% of his practice and will continue to grow. All the doctors and staff of Research Pet and Bird Hospital have made a commitment to meeting this challenge.
Dr. Skellenger shares his energies between the management of a successful practice, and the practice of veterinary medicine. He loves to teach his staff, clients, and anyone willing to listen.
